The Exploring the Scriptures handout (available in the vestibule) is my favorite "prayer starter" but there are others. On line there is an excellent site called Sacred Space run by the Irish Jesuits. I've made it my home page so as to remind me to pray.
Last week there was a reflection on the call of Matthew and it mentioned this painting.
Jesus calls Matthew. Matthew is surprised; Peter is surprised. In fact, Peter is arguing with Jesus about this, trying to dissuade him. One can speculate as to the reasons. But Jesus is insistent. Those around Matthew miss the call - one is too busy minding the money. The young boy has a look of incomprehension. The one whose back is turned to us is interested, but the call right then is not to him. It is to Matthew, and Matthew must respond. The timing is inconvienent, and it looks as though even the act of standing up will disturb everything.
Any other reflections on this painting? If you'd like to see it larger, click on the painting itself. If you'd like to see it even larger than that, you can try Googling the image, using the words "The Calling of St. Matthew" or the painter's name, Caravaggio.
(p.s. Check the comments for another great prayer resource!)
