This morning began with a tour of the beautiful church at St. Mary's, and with the arrival of Jesus, shown in the photo, who walked with me to Tukwila. He has quite a story which I cannot go into in great detail but he came to this country when he was 17, fleeing from domestic abuse, and eventually obtained his green card. He has been here nearly 40 years and now has health problems, as does his wife. One of their two children is autistic, severely so from the details he shared. He fears that he will have to return to Mexico and worries about his autistic daughter, since he says she cannot get the kind of care she needs in Mexico. He fears he will have to leave his wife and children behind for her sake if his current green card extension is not approved, and, rightly or wrongly, he is not optimistic about his chances.
As we walked, he told me all this and more. When we arrived at St. Thomas in Tukwila, we were welcomed by the pastor, who also drove Jesus back to Seattle. Tonight I will have dinner with Fr. Gerry Mayovsky, the pastor, and some staff and parishioners.
