Nick and I spent the night in the basement of Immaculate Conception Church in Everett. There was a music group practicing above us in the church. Twins, around 8 or 9, explored the basement and were surprised to see us. "Oh, are you doing a sleepover?" I hadn't thought of it that way, but yes.
This morning Nick decided to drive support car in order to give his feet a rest for the coming week. Bob and I started walking alone, and he is such good company that despite getting lost at first, the miles went quickly. We were joined by Lee, Danny, Denise and Derek, and then by Ellen and Luis. Their stories were inspiring! This is one of the best parts of this walk: the stories we share.
The welcome at St. Thomas More was overwhelming - not only snacks and offers of a place to stay, but Benediction and a rosary, followed by a great dinner and a discussion which was heartfelt. We met Moses who was in the detention center for 6 months, and is now being electronically monitored, with a curfew of 10 p.m. He does not have the $5,000-$10,000 for a lawyer to handle his appeal. The pastor, Rev. Maurice Mamba Ngalamulume, is going to preside over Mass at 9 a.m. and start walking with us on Monday, August 9 at around 9:40. Join us!
